  1. TOYOTOMI HIDEYOSHI: A Japanese warlord 
  2. who succeeded, with ODA NOBUNAGA and 
  3. TOKUGAWA IEYASU, in reuniting JAPAN. 
  4. The son of poor infantryman, Toyotomi rose 
  5. through the ranks to become a leading 
  6. warlord and a contender for the shogunate. 
  7. By 1590 he had crushed all rival warlords and 
  8. was appointed civil dictator by the emperor. 
  9. He then turned  his intention to KOREA, 
  10. reputedly the first step in an attempt to 
  11. conquer CHINA. CHINA came to KOREA's 
  12. aid and the Japanese army was forced to 
  13. retreat. A second invasion was a similar 
  14. negotiations for a peace treaty were 
  15. underway. His family was wiped out in 1614-
  16. 1615 by his one-time ally, TOKUGAWA 
  17. IEYASU, who wanted to seize all power in 
  18. JAPAN for his own family. (See also Japan
